28 million arrivals expected in Greece in 2017
Positive signs for industry
All the signs indicate that Greek tourism is expecting a very successful
summer season.
Greek hotel owners and industry professionals are
confident the current season will be extended based on messages by
foreign tour operators and are already setting their eyes on the next
season.
2017 is considered a success, despite the slow start in the
year, as the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) expects arrivals to
exceed 28 million (including cruise-ships), with estimates of revenue
reaching 14.5 billion euros.
According to a study conducted by GBR
Consulting, Athens and Thessaloniki saw a double digit rise in revenues
during the first quarter of 2017, while the data for resort bookings was
also impressive.
Meanwhile, the Hellenic Hotel Federation predict
vacancy capacities will hover around record numbers for the season,
provided stability remains in the wider region.
However, the issue of
the tax for overnight stays, which is scheduled to take effect from the
start of 2018 is of concern in the industry, as it will push revenues
down.

Traditional galatopita
By:
Georgia Kofina
| | Desserts, Greek Classics, Mediterranean Cooking
Galatopita, or milk pie, is a traditional Greek dessert that is made with or without crisp phyllo and a super-satisfying custard cream made with semolina flour. You will absolutely love it!
Serves: – Preparation: 15′ Cooks in: 60′ Ready in: 1:15′
Ingredients
3lt sheep milk
1½ cup fine semolina flour
½ cup semolina flour
1½ cup granulated sugar
6 eggs
½ tsp vanilla
lemon or orange zest
2 tbsp butter, melted
icing sugar + cinnamon for dusting
Method
Step 1
Brush a heavy pan with water. Bring milk, 1/2 cup of sugar, lemon zest and butter to a simmer. Whisk in semolina, a little at a time, with a wooden spoon, and simmer, whisking constantly, until custard thickens and reaches consistency of loose mashed potatoes. Remove pan from heat and let cool a little.
Step 2
Preheat oven at 170C. Whisk together eggs, remaining sugar and vanilla in a large bowl until well combined. Add in warm semolina mixture (not hot) and whisk, a little at a time, to temper yolks.
Step 3
Pour mixture in a baking pan (40cm diameter) brushed well with butter. Put oven rack in middle position and bake for 45-50 minutes until filling is golden and top is nicely browned (to test, insert a skewer into the middle of the pie; if the skewer comes out clean, it’s ready).
Step 4
Serve warm or at room temperature, dusted with confectioners sugar and cinnamon.

Money Magazine Includes Crete Among ’10 Best European Destinations’
The island of Crete
in Greece is considered the third “Best European Destination” by Money
magazine, mainly due to its numerous attractions and competitive prices.
Money is a magazine that is published by Time Inc. and includes articles that cover personal finance topics ranging from investing, saving, retirement and taxes to family finance issues.
Taking into consideration the “record low summer transatlantic airfares” and the strong U.S. dollar, the magazine urges travelers to pack their walking shoes and travel from the United States to popular European destinations such as Crete, Paris, Prague, Rome, Italy and Barcelona, among others.
Money named Crete a “best destination for your money” due to its world-famous sites like the Palace of Knossos, its outdoor attractions, beautiful beaches, distinct culture and cuisine.
The Elafonisi Beach and the Balos Beach and Lagoon are suggested by the magazine as Crete’s must-see spots.
According to Money, the cost to spend a week for two on Crete would reach $3,697 as ticket prices have gone down nine percent since 2016, while hotel prices have dropped as well.
The “10 Best European Destinations” are:
1. Prague, Czech Republic
2. Paris, France
3. Crete, Greece
4. Krakow, Poland
5. Rome, Italy
6. Lisbon, Portugal
7. Budapest, Hungary
8. Barcelona, Spain
9. Berlin, Germany
10. Riga, Latvia
The top 10 cities scored highest on overall cost factors, giving the most weight to the price of airfare, lodging, and food, as well as the biggest year-over-year price drops.
Money also considered the number of restaurants and attractions each place offered, as well as experience factors like low crime rates, pleasant weather and ease of access to public transportation.

Traditional galaktoboureko
Serves: 24 Preparation: 15′ Cooks in: 1h + 15′ Ready in: 1h + 30′
Ingredients
500gr phyllo pastry
200gr high quality butter, melted
For the custard:
1.250ml milk full fat
1 cup sugar
4 fresh eggs
½ cup flour
½ cup fine semolina
1 unwaxed lemon, zested
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp high quality butter
For the syrup:
2½ cups sugar
1½ cup water
2 tbsp glucose syrup
1 lemon, juiced
1 cinnamon stick
Method
Step 1
For the syrup:
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and boil over medium high heat for approximately 10 minutes, stirring until sugars dissolves completely and you are left with a heavy syrup. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
Step 2
For the custard: Beat eggs with sugar using a hand mixer until fluffy. Add semolina, flour and milk and beat until combined well. Heat the mixture in a large saucepan, over medium-low heat, stirring until it thickens. When it comes to a boil add vanilla extract, butter and lemon zest, stirring until combined well. Set aside to cool completely, stirring occasionally to prevent the milk proteins from forming a thin crust on top.
Step 3
Assemble the galaktoboureko: Brush well the bottom and sides of a rectangular pan with butter. Unwrap the phyllo roll fully, carefully layer the first sheet in the bottom of the pan and brush it really well with melted butter. Repeat the same procedure until you have layered half of the phyllo sheets. When you have almost layered half the sheets, drape two sheets so that they extend half in the pan and half out of the pan horizontally.
Step 4
Spread the custard evenly on top of the sheets, smoothing the surface with a spatula. Fold the phyllo sheet flaps in over the custard layer. Add the remaining sheets on top, brushing each one with melted butter.
Step 5
Score only the top layer of phyllo with a serrated knife, to enable easier cutting later.
Melt the rest of the butter and pour over the surface using a spoon. Bake at 175°C/fan for at least an hour until nicely golden brown.
Step 6
Pour over the hot galaktoboureko with the cold syrup, using a spoon, allowing time for it to be absorbed. Do not cover. Best serve warm and the same day because, once refrigerated, the custard tends to harden and lose its lovely texture.

Greek Blue Flag Beaches in World’s Top 3
Greek beaches have consecutively been listed in the top three spots of the highly coveted Blue Flags Program, the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF) said on occasion of the 30th anniversary of the project.
According to EEPF, which has been responsible for the Foundation for Environmental Education’s (FEE) Blue Flag program in Greece since 1992, its aim is to achieve the first position for Greek beaches and coasts. Indicatively, in 1987, the Blue Flag was awarded to 244 coasts worldwide and seven beaches in Greece. Of the 3,568 beaches awarded today, 430 are in Greece.
“The Blue Flag is a collective effort, and the EEPF would like to thank all the administrators of beaches and marinas, supporters, sponsors and volunteers who have backed the program over the years. With unparalleled diligence, common goals and vision, we will act together for the best results towards the development of sustainable tourism for the benefit of our country,” said EEPF President Nikos Petrou.
On the initiative of the FEE, the Blue Flag Program labels beaches and marinas as well as sustainable boating tourism operators appropriate for swimming based on cleanness, water quality, organization, safety and services, environmental management and protection and certifies the best every year ahead of summer.

Greek Moussaka: Tradition meets taste!
By:
Tina Webb
| Greek Classics, Meals |Mediterranean Cooking|
It doesn’t get more Greek than a plate of Moussaka though Turks may beg to differ. In Arabic countries the dish is served cold whereas the Balkan Moussaka is served hot. What differentiates the Greek version are the layers that are separately cooked before being combined in the final baking process. The modern Greek version was probably formulated by chef Tselementes in the Twenties…
Serves: 1 full dish Preparation time: 20m Cooks in: 2 hours Ready in: 2 hours and 20 minutes
Ingredients
6 large eggplants
Frying oil
For the minced meat sauce:
700 grams of minced beef
1 large onion, grated
1 glass of white wine
1 coffee cup of oil
2 table spoons of tomato paste
5 grains of spices
6 table spoons of finely chopped parsley
salt, pepper
For the bechamel sauce:
6 tablespoons of butter
8 tablespoons of flour
800 ml milk
3 eggs
nutmeg
salt, pepper
Method
Step 1
Cut the eggplants into slices of 1 cm each. Salt these and place them on a sieve for half an hour. Rinse these with water and squeeze out the juices.
Step 2
Dry out the slices and fry these in ample frying oil until they are golden brown on both sides. Place these on kitchen paper to absorb the juice. Another option would be to brush them with olive oil and grill these.
Step 3
Prepare the minced meat. Heat the oil and saute the finely chopped onion. Add the minced meat and keep stirring. Add white sauce. Dissolve the tomato paste in some water and add it to the minced meat. Add spice, parsley, salt and peper and keep stirring until all the juices have dried up. Put the minced meat to the side so that it cools down.
Step 4
Prepare the bechamel sauce. Heat the butter in a pot, add the flour and sauté until the mixture darkens. Add warm milk while constantly stirring the mixture. Pull away from the heat, as soon as the bechamel sauce thickens. Add the spice, salt and pepper. Add cheese and keep stirring while folding the eggs into the mixture. Stir fast until the mixture sets.
Step 5
Heat the oven to 170 degrees. Place half the fried eggplants at the bottom of the dish. Place the minced meat on top and level with a spoon so that it is evenly spread. Add a second layer of eggplants. Pour the bechamel sauce on top and spread it out evenly. Place the dish in the oven for one hour until a golden crust forms on top of the sauce. Let it cool down for half an hour before serving.

Calls for Minoan Civilization, Spinalonga to be Named UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Delegates from 18 countries gathered on Crete last weekend to discuss the inclusion of Minoan Civilization and the islet of Spinalonga – once a leper colony – on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list.
Experts from Asia, Europe, Africa, North and South America convened at Heraklion’s St Mark Basilica chaired by Culture Ministry Secretary General Maria Vlazaki to discuss the protection of cultural property from antiquities smuggling activities, while committee members had the chance earlier that day to visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and learn more about the Minoan Palaces including Knossos, Phaistos, Zakros, Malia and Cydonia via a video presentation.
“We are confident that the UNESCO Committee will contribute to the common effort for the protection of the world’s archaeological treasures and the Region of Crete is present in this action,” said Arnaoutakis.

Time for Greece to Capitalize on Safety, Its Strong Point
By Maria Paravantes in Berlin
It’s time for Greece to capitalize on its leading strong point – security, Michalis Vamiedakis, Crete Tourism Commissioner told the Greek Travel Pages (GTP) during the ITB Berlin on Thursday.
“The good news is that we are seeing
increased bookings and more reservations for the off season period like
April and May, the bad news that many of these bookings have been made
very early when hoteliers made extremely low offers which is bound to
take a bite out of revenue,” Vamiedakis told the GTP, adding that the resultant increase in tourism due to the situation in Turkey must be taken advantage of.
“It is vital that we capitalize on the
current demand for Greece, offer the finest services at competitive
prices and promote the added advantage of Greece right now, namely that
it is a safe and secure destination,” Vamiedakis said, echoing the
sentiments of many of his colleagues at the ITB.
But he was quick to point out that
stakeholders must also “remain wise, keep their prices down and spread
the word that Greece is value for money due to the safety it offers”.
“We must also aim parallel to the sea and
sun concept to promote new tourism segments like agro-tourism, health,
conference and other forms of the product offering diversity and at the
same time focusing on what brings in travelers.”

Crete: The Apokriés, or Carnival season in Rethymno, Brings Thousands of Tourists...
Since 1914 beautiful Renaissance Rethymnon has been celebrating the
carnival with its many humoristic events. A carnival of another era
leaving behind its nostalgic aroma of romantic balls and the Rethymnians
through laughter and their comical antics paying their tribute to "His
Excellence, The King of the Carnival."
The Treasure Hunt, an old custom dating back to when the Carnival of Rethymno began about a century ago, was the reason for the creation of 'teams' in 1990, which would give birth once again to this age-old tradition.
In 1993, the Municipality of Rethymnon decided to help fund this popular event and requested the teams to take on the challenging task of creating and organising the Carnival of Rethymnon, which has become the most popular and famous Carnival of Crete!
The whole town becomes one big party: for almost a whole month, the city plays host to a succession of fun-filled celebrations, bringing together locals and visitors who participate in this carnival because they love to enjoy every moment of their lives.
You will see groups of people sitting together in traditional cafés (kafeneia) drinking “tsikoudiá” (raki), tasting Cretan titbits and thinking up “mantinádes” (folk couplet songs) on the spot.
Carnival in Rethymno, an institution with a great history, has withstood the test of time and returns each year full of vigour.
It is a superb way to raise your spirits, meet new people and experience an event that is pure magic.

Positive Signs for Greek Tourism as Pre-bookings Grow
Tourists from Germany, Russia and the UK have
already made plans to visit Greece this summer pushing the number of
pre-bookings into positive territory and offering sector professionals a
glimpse of what’s in store for 2017.
Arrivals from Germany are expected to grow by 40 percent, from the UK by 15 percent and from Russia by 25 percent compared to 2016.
At the same time, interest from other markets, including France, Switzerland and Canada, has also begun to warm up. Travelers this year are keen on visiting Crete, Rhodes and Kos — islands which are expected to draw in the crowds thanks to a number of newly launched direct flights.
Vacationers from the US are also expected to rise this year, following a double-digit increase in 2015-2016, Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura said while in the US for the New York Times Travel Show.
Meanwhile, TUI reports a 41 percent rise in the number of bookings for Greece, while Thomas Cook is describing Greece as this year’s “ultimate destination”.
Spain remains Greece’s main competitor as the leading choice for holidays together with rivals Italy and Portugal. Egypt, meanwhile is regaining ground due to affordable holiday deals.

Greece Tops Austrian Travelers’ Wish List for 2017
Greece is a favorite destination for Austrian holidaymakers judging
by their pre-bookings which are up by 60 percent for the summer ahead,
TUI Austria CEO Lisa Weddig said on Tuesday during a presentation in
Vienna, of the group’s 2017 program.
Greece destinations Crete, Corfu and Rhodes are at the top of Austrian travelers’ wish lists, according to Weddig, with Kos also regaining lost ground – bookings there have double compared to last year.
To meet the demand, TUI Austria, a member of TUI Group, announced last week that it had boosted its flights to the four Greek islands by 15 percent.
Greece is the leading European destination of choice for a second year running, followed by Spain, Italy, Croatia and Egypt, Wedding said, adding that Turkey on the other hand is seeing last year’s dramatic 40 percent decline drop even further.
Weddig added that the company’s turnover for 2016 grew by 30 percent.

Greece on behalf of the GTO, showed that a vast majority of the

Greece Set to Gain in 2017 as Safe Destination
Greece is expected to gain from the instability in the wider
Mediterranean region with pre-bookings setting the trend for 2017, Alpha
Bank analysts reported this week.
According to the Alpha Bank assessment, which cites data from the National Bank of Greece, the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) and the Foundation of Economic & Industrial Research (IOBE), there is considerable tourism potential for 2017 with Greece remaining a steady and safe choice for holidaymakers.
As 2016 draws to a close, tourist arrivals are expected to reach 24.5 million against 23.5 million in 2015, excluding cruise travelers and despite the ongoing refugee crisis with resultant revenue however remaining at the same levels with last year.
Alpha Bank analysts also referred to the return of tourists from Russia, with the number up by 18.9 percent in the first nine months of 2016, against a drop of 62.1 percent in the corresponding period last year.
According to SETE meanwhile, the number of arrivals are also reflecting the positive trend for the new year with the country’s major airports welcoming 25.1 percent more visitors in October and 13.5 percent more in September demonstrating that the tourism season is extending beyond the traditional summer months of June, July and August, with autumn months now playing a crucial role in the overall performance of the sector.

Athens among the top 17 places to travel in 2017
Conde Nast Traveler published the list with the best places to travel in 2017.
According to the list, the best place to visit in 2017 is Canada.
Athens is fifth on the list.
"Athens has always been known as an old city, that’s nothing new.
Instead, what is new is its burgeoning status as a modern arts capital: Look no further than the recently opened, Renzo Piano-designed, $623 million Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, which houses the National Opera and the National Library of Greece, sits on the biggest park in Athens, and is the first public building in Greece to achieve a Platinum LEED certification. The National Museum of Contemporary Art also partially reopened in a renovated brewery after a 12-year closure, and in April, the city will co-host documenta, the exhibition of modern and contemporary art that takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany (it’s the first time the hosting duties will be split between two cities).Though it’s long played second fiddle to other European capitals like Rome, and merely seen as a stopover point on the way to, say, Corfu, Athens has once again arrived."

Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice 2016 Awards: Crete voted among the best islands in the world
Condé Nast Traveler readers ranked the best islands in the world outside the U.S. in the 2016 Readers' Choice Awards survey, from nearby Caribbean beaches to far-flung islands in Southeast Asia...
The largest Greek Isle, Crete is also one of the most distinctive, with its own unmistakable culture, landscape, and mythological history.
Make sure to visit the Minoan palaces in Knossos if you make it beyond the beach.
Pro tip: Skip the bumpy drive or three-hour hike to one of the most photographed spots in Crete. Balos Beach is most easily accessed by ferries from Kissamos port.
Getting there: Most flights to Crete connect in Athens, but visitors can also take the year-round ferry from Piraeus or the summertime ferry from Santorini.

Have a nice October! Autumn in Crete..
The experience of a lifetime!
(source:VisitGreece)
It’s a common secret among travellers to Crete that summertime on the island is at least 2 months longer than most European destinations.
The Telegraph had an article about autumn tourist destinations where Crete features as a warm and welcoming place.
The Austrian newspaper Kurier published a long praising article on the island describing it as a place where you can enjoy a laid back summer vacation in autumn and get to know local tradition.
The Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail has included Crete in the six top European destinations for an autumn holiday,
saying that people who prefer to extend their summer vacation all the
way into October should visit Crete.
One of the island’s biggest assets -
apart from beaches - is the famous Cretan cuisine which you can enjoy all over the place.
The reason for all of the above is quite simple. Crete is located in the southeast part of the European continent and temperature never drops below 20º C from September until November. The average sunshine totals seven hours. Water temperature
in the south shores washed by the Libyan sea reaches 23º C and the
average air temperature is 26º C.
The atmosphere is limpid most of the time and the tall mountains are clearly defined against the horizon in every detail.
The summer’s blue sea waters change into new fascinating hues, the autumn winds fill the heretofore clear blue skies with amazing cloud shapes and the fairly limited rainfall is very welcome after the dry season has passed.
However swimming remains one of the activities you will definitely enjoy even in late October. Make a note that at this time of the year you will find that there are less tourists so you’ll get better holiday deals as prices are down compared to the high season.
While you are on your autumn trip to Crete don’t miss the opportunity to visit the renowned historical sites, monuments and museums. The season’s mild weather will tempt you to discover inland secrets and the wide variety of flora and fauna, to visit picturesque mountainous villages as well as those of the lowlands, to follow the hiking trails, go mountaineering or cross breathtaking ravines such as the well-known Samaria Gorge, Kourtaliotiko Gorge etc.
The end of the summer is the time for agricultural activities such as grape harvesting and sun-drying of the grape berries so as to produce raisins. Ploughing, sowing, grape pressing, wine and raki making are all activities that take place later in the fall. This time of year you can follow the traditional agricultural activities: participate in grape harvesting and pressing, go olive picking, watch the procedure of raki making in cauldrons- cauldron feasts, as it evolves into a traditional celebration, taste local products and learn about the way they are made in the island’s agritourism farms. Let’s bear in mind that traditional Cretan cuisine is based on fresh seasonal produce and that makes it all the more tasty not to mention healthier and more nutritious!

Photo of the day: Summer non stop at South Crete, Greece!
Still warm to take a photo from inside..
Set beside a long southern-coast beach, between two immense wind tunnel gorges, Plakias was once a humble fishing village.
In 1961, the official census recorded a population of just six. Today its population explodes each summer with Central European package tourists...
While the town itself isn’t particularly peaceful, from here you can walk through olive groves, along seaside cliffs and to some sparkling hidden beaches.
It’s also a good base for regional excursions.
